A new course at Boise State will feature school president Dr. Marlene Tromp.

The course – Leading & Learning During Uncertain Times – brings Tromp together with College of Innovation and Design Dean Gordon Jones.

“The idea is to look at leading and learning during times of rapid change,” Jones told BoiseDev. “It’s a chance to encourage both a learning and a feedback loop.”

“We are watching the global pandemic change the world before our very eyes,” Tromp said. “Unprecedented challenges also brings incredible opportunity for all of us to learn and grow.”

Jones said the course sits against the backdrop of COVID-19, and the school’s work to respond to the challenges brought on by the pandemic.

“There’s been hundreds of thousands of hours spent into planning,” he said. “This is a place to teach students about leading and learning, specifically against the COVID backdrop.”

Jones said the course will be interactive and give participating students a chance to provide feedback to school leadership, starting with Tromp, on the school’s efforts this fall.

“We also aim to gain insights from our students on what they need, what’s working best for them, and how we can innovate and better serve our community,” Tromp said. “I will share with students my experience— and stories from my colleagues at Boise State and nationally— of leading a truly complex organization during this challenging time.

The half-semester course will start in October and run through December. Jones said guest lecturers may also speak, and he hopes to dive into topics like healthcare, residential live-learn and more.
