Tua Tagovailoa’s Wonderlic score higher than first reported, but still low - Tampa Bay Times

UPDATE: Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer and Senior Bowl executive director/ESPN draft analyst Jim Nagy clarified Sunday that — while accurate — the Wonderlic scores originally reported by The Athletic’s Bob McGinn are not the most recent results.

Quarterbacks Tua Tagovailoa of Alabama and Justin Herbert of Oregon, like many others, took the test twice: once during their junior pro days, and a second time at the NFL combine in February.

Tagovailoa scored 13 out of a possible 50 points on the test that measures general cognitive ability in math, vocabulary, and reasoning during his junior pro day. He improved his score to 19 at the combine.

Herbert’s score jumped 14 points — from 25 at his pro day to 39 at the combine.

Breer shared updated scores for three other quarterbacks, including Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts (21), in a separate Twitter post.

The scores reported by McGinn were from the players’ junior pro days.

DEVELOPING: The Athletic’s Bob McGinn reports that former Alabama star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa scored a woeful 13 on the Wonderlic test, administered by the NFL to draft prospects before the draft.

Among the other first-round prospects among quarterbacks, McGinn reported that LSU’s Jake Burrow scored 34, Utah State’s Jordan Love got 27 and Oregon’s Justin Herbert had 25.

The highest reported score among the 2020 quarterback draft prospects was a 40 by Iowa’s Nate Stanley.

Current Dolphins starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick’s 48 (number of correct answers out of 50 questions) is reportedly tied for the third-best all time (Fitzpatrick’s fellow Harvard alumnus Pat McInally, a Bengals punter from 1976-85, owns the lone perfect score).

Quarterbacks often have brushed off a low Wonderlic to star in the league. Dolphins Hall of Famer Dan Marino’s score in 1983 was widely reported to be 16, and Ravens quarterback and 2019 league MVP Lamar Jackson was reported to have the same score as Tagovailoa two years ago.
