Oscars Change Best Score Requirement Rules - Pitchfork

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences—the organization that puts on the annual Academy Awards show—has modified the eligibility requirements for the Best Original Score Oscar, which previously specified that a film’s score must be “predominantly” original, the Hollywood Reporter reports. At least 60 percent of a film's music must now be new.

The change followed a period of study by the governors of the Academy’s sound branch, which also consolidated its two sound categories, reducing the number of Oscars presented on the show’s telecast from 24 to 23. Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing, which have been permanent separate categories since 2006, will be merged into the a single Best Sound award.

Other restrictions were loosened due to coronavirus concerns; the previous requirement for a film to screen for at least one week in a Los Angeles-area theater has been lifted, allowing films that debut on streaming services to qualify for the 2021 Academy Awards. Most theaters throughout the U.S. remain closed indefinitely.

The 2021 Academy Awards is currently scheduled for February 27, 2021. Hildur Guðnadóttir won the Oscar for best original score at this year’s Oscars ceremony for The Joker.
