Friday night's Ryan Conference USA Championship game will pit an 11-1 UTSA team against an 8-4 Western Kentucky squad. Despite the difference in their records, it's actually WKU entering the game on stronger footing, as the Hilltoppers have rattled off seven straight victories since losing at home to UTSA on Oct. 9.
The Roadrunners, on the other hand, are coming off a stunning 45-23 loss at North Texas last week that ruined their chances of a perfect season. That loss came just two weeks after UTSA was taken to the wire at home by a struggling Southern Miss team. But it's still been an extraordinary season for the program under second-year coach Jeff Traylor. A win in the C-USA title game would merely be further validation of the progress the program has made in a decade since joining the FBS ranks.
For WKU, a victory would be a statement win for the pass-happy system implemented by first-year offensive coordinator Zach Kittley under the direction of third-year head coach Tyson Helton. The Hilltoppers lead the nation in passing yards per game at 424.8 and have only refined the system since their 52-46 loss to UTSA in the first meeting. It should be a thrilling game as these two squads rematch with a conference title on the line.
