Cowboys LB/DE Micah Parsons is the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month for November after recording 6 1/2 sacks, eight tackles for loss, 12 quarterback hits and two forced fumbles in the last four games. Parsons, who is the clear favorite to win NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, should have a significant impact again tonight against a Saints team that will be without both starting offensive tackles, Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramczyk.
Even with DE DeMarcus Lawrence returning from a broken foot, Parsons should see plenty of opportunities to rush the passer inside the Superdome.
“Let the eyes be on me,” Parsons said of playing in the prime-time nationally televised game. “It ain't going to change my preparation. Some people are just born for (the moment), and I believe I was born for it."
Parsons has exceeded all expectations in his first NFL season. He’s 10th in the league with nine sacks, tied for second in tackles for loss with 15, and tied for fourth in QB hits with 23.
“He jumps off the tape at you,” Saints coach Sean Payton said. “I think more recently at the end position. He’s impressive when he rushes, obviously when he plays at linebacker the same way. I think when he gets on the tackles, though, and is rushing, he’s a handful.”
Parsons said this week that nothing he’s done this year has surprised him. He acknowledged that expectations for rookies are generally lower than for veterans, but he doesn’t see himself as a rookie player.
“It’s very different working for the Dallas Cowboys,” Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said this week when asked about Parsons. “It’s a spotlight like none other, regardless if you’re a first-round pick or a free agent. Once you have the opportunity to perform and you do perform at a high level, that spotlight only gets brighter.
“I look for him to be a great player in this league for a long time. But great players make everyone else around them better, so that’s the part that you have to learn. It’s development.
“And he’s very fortunate to have the Dak Prescotts of the world in our locker room to give him the guidance and be an excellent example of what the expectation of him is that’s needed for our team to be as successful as we want to be, and obviously for him to reach the goals that he has for himself personally.”
