BIG RAPIDS – Luke Welch’s game-winning goal in overtime to help the Big Rapids hockey Cardinals defeat Cadillac in the U.S. 131 Cup game has been key highlight for Welch and the team so far this young season.
But they’re obviously hoping there will several more memorable moments.
Welch is a senior forward expected to be among the Cardinals’ top players.
“We started off the season a little slow our first game but fought back our second game and made a statement (against Cadillac),” Welch said.
It’s Welch’s third year on the varsity.
“I’m just looking to help my team however I can,” Welch said. “Whatever is needed from me, if it’s scoring or getting assists or blocking a shot, I’ll do it.”
From last year, “I’ve improved a lot,” Welch said. “I’ve gotten quicker and stronger.”
This weekend, Big Rapids is at the Gaylord Invitational.
Welch has high hopes for the 2021-22 season.
“I feel as long as we keep developing, we can make a good run in the playoffs,” he said.
It’s a team dominated by seniors.
“We have a lot of seniors and a lot of veterans and we can hold them all accountable, Welch said. “All our opponents are tough this year, we can’t take anyone for granted.”
Welch is also expected to be among Big Rapids best golfers during the spring.
