Small Business Adminstration Vermont The Center for Women & Enterprise Vermont is accepting applications for its Power Forward class, a free 10-week strategic growth planning course. Classes will be held virtually from 9:30 a.m. to noon Thursdays beginning Jan. 13.
The course provides a framework for business owners to expand and evolve their business knowledge, and to develop new strategies for long-term business success. This class introduces new tools and resources to create, review, revise and revisit a powerful strategy plan.
Applicants must have revenues of at least $50,000 a year and been in business for at least two years.

Mike Vlacich was sworn in as New England Regional Administrator for the U.S. Small Business Administration. In this position he has oversight of the six district offices located in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. “I’m honored to be appointed by the Biden-Harris Administration to serve as SBA’s New England Regional Administrator under the leadership of Administrator Isabella Casillas Guzman,” said Regional Administrator Mike Vlacich. “Our small businesses play a critical role in our nation’s economy and as they continue to face unique and unexpected challenges, I’m ready to advocate for them as we continue to build a better America.” Mr. Vlacich is a respected New Hampshire public servant with extensive economic development, policy, and constituent service experience at the nonprofit, state, and federal government levels. Prior to his appointment to the SBA, he served as a Senior Advisor to U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, and over the years has served in other leadership roles in her U.S. Senate and Governor’s offices. He previously served as President and CEO of the New Hampshire College and University Council, State Director for U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan, Director of the New Hampshire Division of Economic Development, and Deputy Chief of Staff to New Hampshire Governor John Lynch. Mr. Vlacich is responsible for the effective delivery of SBA’s programs to the 1.5 million small businesses in New England. |
In response to COVID-19, the Vermont Community Action Partnership and the Micro Business Development Program established the Economic Micro Business Recovery Assistance for the COVID-19 Epidemic direct grant program.
EMBRACE issues $5,000 grants to businesses with five or fewer employees.
Grants will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.

The SBA Vermont District Office is accepting nominations for its 2022 small business awards. Previous Vermont winners include Ben and Jerry’s, Mamava and Lawson's Finest Liquids.
These annual awards recognize the achievements of SBA-assisted small businesses and the contributions they have made to their communities and Vermont’s economy.
To nominate a Vermont small business, email the name of the business along with the owner’s name and specific award category the company is being nominated for to daniel.monahan@sba.gov. Businesses may self-nominate.
The categories are as follows:
Small Business Person of the Year
Criteria: Individual or partners who own a small business, which has increased sales, profits and employees, and have been in business for three years. Business must have received Small Business Administration assistance.
Exporting Small Business of the Year
Criteria: Small business which has increased sales, profits and/or employees due to exporting and been in business for three years.
Family-Owned Small Business of the Year
Criteria: Small business must be family-owned for at least 15 years and ownership has transitioned to another generation.
Veteran-Owned Small Business of the Year
Criteria: Small business at least 51% owned by a veteran of U.S. armed forces, which has been in business for three years.
Woman-Owned Small Business of the Year
Criteria: Small business at least 51% owned by a woman, which has been in business for three years.
Minority-Owned Small Business of the Year
Criteria: Small business at least 51% owned by an ethnic minority, which has been in business for three years.
Young Entrepreneur of the Year
Criteria: Individual or partners who own a small business, are under 30, and have been in business for three years.
Microenterprise of the Year
Criteria: Individual or partners who own a microenterprise with five or less employees, received SBA assistance and have been in business for three years.
