UW–Madison Libraries tip: Options to provide equitable access to course materials – eCALS - wisc.edu

bermudalagi.blogspot.com

UW–Madison Libraries encourages you to provide students with equitable access to materials in your courses. Students report that the high cost of course materials prevent them from purchasing these items and fully participating in courses. In addition, non-residential and non-traditional students may have limited access to physical materials due to limited time on campus for visiting the library.

Here are two ways the Libraries can partner with you to increase access to your course materials:

  • Place materials on reserve –  Librarians can help you determine if course material (videos, books, articles etc.) is freely available to students online through a library purchase or as a public domain or creative commons work. The Libraries can also put print items on reserve for limited circulation at the library.
  • Use Open Educational Resources (OER) – These are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. The Libraries can help you find or create OER for your courses. Visit Discovering & Using OER for more information.

As always, you can contact the Science & Engineering Libraries at askSEL@library.wisc.edu with any questions!
