Kansas State (5-4-0) defeated the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (4-5-1) with aggressive offense and stout defense, shutting out the Vaqueros 2-0 in the second match of a three-match homestand.
The Wildcats came firing out of the gates on offense with a whopping eight shots attempted in the first ten minutes of the match, four of which were shots on goal.
In the 18th minute of the first half, midfielder Brookelynn Entz made an assist to Marisa Weichel to capture a K-State record of three game-winning goals in a season.
“I have to thank my teammates,” Weichel said to K-State Athletics. “All these goals are assisted, so I’m getting great balls in to finish them.”
Weichel was one-on-one with the Vaquero goalkeeper, striking the ball across her body and finding the bottom-left corner of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. Weichel said scoring first in a match does a lot for the team’s confidence.
“It’s always huge because it’s a big momentum shift,” Weichel said. “We kept hitting the crossbar and kept getting shots off. I really think it helped us to keep getting chances and then when Porter [List] came in, she was able to get a shot off too.”
With Weichel’s goal, she now sits second in school history for goals in a season (5). She also sits at third in program history with 10 points so far this season.

Sophomore midfielder/forward Porter List scored her first career goal as a K-State Wildcat in the 35th minute of the match. Teammate Roo Yarnell-Williams assisted the shot with a reflection off of a Vaquero defender, gifting List the opportunity of a lifetime.
“It felt pretty awesome. It’s a long time waiting,” List said. “It is a huge and great deal to be on this program.”
The Wildcats finished the first half with 22 shots attempted and 10 shots on goal. The team held the Vaqueros to no shots on goal.
K-State’s offense was less aggressive in the second half, but the defense out-matched UTRGV’s efforts, allowing only two more shot opportunities than in the first half. The defensive stronghold gave sophomore goalkeeper Alaina Werremeyer her fifth shutout victory of the season.
“We have to have the mindset and urgency, and the intensity of understanding that it’s Big 12 play, and I think they’ll bring that to the table for longer periods of time,” head coach Mike Dibbini said. “If our mentality is strong going into Big 12 and we clean up the areas we need to work on, anything can happen.”
The Wildcats look to extend their success going into the home Big 12 opener against Texas at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, with broadcast provided by the Big 12 Network on ESPN+.
