Now that summer is, at least “unofficially” over, it’s hunting time in Wisconsin. Some seasons are already underway – the early teal and Canada goose seasons opened on September 1st. But Wisconsin’s gun deer season is “the main event” that most associate with hunting, and if you want in, you’ll need a license. To get that, anyone born on or after January 1st of 1973 will need to pass a hunter education certification course. The only exception is under the Mentored Hunting Law.
The Wisconsin DNR is offering three options to complete the course. There’s online-only that requires multiple hours of study and modules to complete. There’s an online plus field day option that adds 4-8 hours of gun handling opportunities, and there’s the most popular traditional multi-session class with a certified instructor conducted over several days.
You’ll have from now until October 1st to complete the course, and you can get started by visiting the Department of Natural Resources online. The link to DNR safety courses is here.
