Founding owner to retire at end of the year

Saddleback Ridge Golf Course in Solon will add single-family homes to the property following an ownership change at the end of 2021, the current and future owners told The Gazette.
Steve Gordon, vice president of Iowa City-based AM Management and part of the new ownership group, said he hopes to build 40 villa-style homes on the southwest part of the property.
Gordon expects construction to begin in spring 2022 and complete work by spring of the following year.
The plans are dependent on support from the city of Solon, Gordon said.
“We’ll be working with the city throughout this fall to get approval for the project, hopefully by the end of the year,” Gordon said.
The developers have not narrowed the target demographics for the villas, but they will be single-level and maintenance-free.
“There’s nothing definitive yet on whether it will be limited to any demographic or age group or anything like that,” Gordon said.
The new ownership group also is eyeing updates to the clubhouse, including new food and entertainment options.
The change in ownership of the 18-hole golf course and driving range will come following founder Ron Rushek’s retirement. He spent more than two decades managing the course.
“I’ll miss so many of the people and the friends I’ve made over the years,” Rushek said.
Rushek chose to sell to the group — Gordon, Jim Miller and Steve Miller from AM Management; Hodge Construction’s Mike Hodge and Kevin Digmann; and local golf professional Tommy Dee — because he “wanted to see it stay a golf course.”
“There were a lot of interested parties, but I felt these guys would do a super job,” Rushek said.
