Final numbers from Raiders' OT win over Ravens

Final numbers from Raiders' OT win over Ravens

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr finished strong in a 33-27 overtime win over the Ravens, completing 34 of 56 passes for 435 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His 31-yard touchdown pass to Zay Jones in overtime was the winning score.

Raiders running back Josh Jacobs had 10 carries for 34 yards and two crucial touchdowns. Raiders tight end Darren Waller fought through a tough Baltimore defense to finish with 10 catches for 105 yards and one touchdown — a 10-yard catch-and-spin that tied the score at 24 in the fourth quarter.

It's Baltimore's first Week 1 loss since 2015.

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson completed 19 of 30 passes for 235 yards and one touchdown with 12 carries for 86 yards. The Ravens might have answers at running back with Ty'Son Williams' nine carries for 65 yards and one touchdown and Latavius Murray's 10 carries for 28 yards and one touchdown. Williams also had three catches for 29 yards.

Sammy Watkins was big for Baltimore with four catches for 96 yards, and Marquise Brown had six catches for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Buckley: Raiders’ Carl Nassib makes a statement not just for today, but for tomorrow

Carl Nassib posted a coming-out announcement that was 60 seconds of grace under pressure, as though he had been practicing for it all week.

He is, after all, a professional football player. It’s what they do. But after getting right to the point — “I just want to take a quick moment to say that I’m gay” — the 28-year-old Las Vegas Raiders defensive end used his Instagram post to deliver what amounts to an old-fashioned fireside chat.

“I just think that representation and visibility are so important,” he said. “… I actually hope that one day videos like this and the whole coming-out process are just not necessary.”

They’re very much still necessary, of course, and will continue to be necessary for a good number of years. The mere fact that Nassib is the first active NFL player to come out as gay is testament to that. So, yes, Carl Nassib has made history. But he’s also made life a hell of a lot easier for young athletes in men’s team sports who might be considering a big announcement of their own.

Another streak for the Ravens

Another streak for the Ravens

Lamar Jackson got shifty (as usual) on an 11-yard run, which led to Justin Tucker's 40-yard field goal and a 17-10 Baltimore lead in the third quarter. The Ravens have had 40 consecutive games with 100-plus rushing yards. They are at 106 yards on the ground tonight against Las Vegas.

The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec adds: Justin Tucker is good from 40 yards to give the Ravens a 17-10 lead with 8:34 left in 3rd quarter. But it's a missed opportunity there for Ravens after a good Devin Duvernay return. Jackson had Ty'Son Williams wide open in the flat on third down and they couldn't connect. It looked like Jackson wanted Williams to get upfield.

Ravens lead Raiders, 14-10 at halftime

Lamar Jackson is 11 of 15 for 128 yards and one touchdown as the Ravens lead the Raiders, 14-10 at halftime.

Ty'Son Williams, who has been a revelation, has seven carries for 64 yards and one touchdown with two catches for 23 yards. Marquise Brown has Jackson's lone touchdown pass along with four catches for 52 yards. Pernell McPhee has a sack, tackle for loss and QB hit for Baltimore's defense.

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is 12 of 25 for 127 yards after overcoming a slow start. Josh Jacobs has Las Vegas' lone touchdown on a 2-yard run with five carries for 18 yards.

Raiders tight end Darren Waller, whom the Ravens have defended well, has four catches for 54 yards on 11 targets.

Raiders on the board

Derek Carr and Darren Waller finally connected on two plays for 32 yards, and that set up the Raiders' first TD of the season with 4:17 left in the first half.

After a pass interference penalty on the Ravens, Josh Jacobs took a handoff from Carr and cut through the Ravens defense for a 2-yard TD run. After the nine-play, 66-yard drive, Baltimore now leads 14-7.

Hollywood hits Las Vegas

The Ravens moved 68 yards on six plays for another TD, this one capped by a scrambling Lamar Jackson finding Marquise "Hollywood" Brown in the back of the end zone. The Ravens lead 14-0 with 8:52 left in the first half.

Issues piling up for Raiders

From The Athletic's Vic Tafur, Tashan Reed and Ted Nguyen:

Justin Houston baptized rookie Alex Leatherwood for a third-down sack, and some boos emerged as the Raiders' offense left the field for a fourth consecutive punt.

The offensive line is short on bodies, Josh Jacobs has been gimpy, Derek Carr has been inaccurate and the wideouts haven't been getting a lot of separation. It's tough sledding for the Raiders offense right now.

And the Raiders' defense of old showed up on the Ravens TD. On 4th and 1, the DL got blocked, and there was a big lane, LB Cory Littleton took a bad angle and the safeties were a step slow. And so Ty'Son Williams got the one yard and 34 more for the touchdown.

Meanwhile, Derek Carr keeps forcing it into Darren Waller. Waller has one catch on seven targets for 13 yards, while all the WRs have one target combined. At one point Carr targeted Waller on five consecutive passes with no completions.

The Raiders have faced third and 9-plus six times already.

Slow start for Raiders offense

Baltimore's defense is doing what it often does.

Derek Carr's past five passes have all been to tight end Darren Waller, all of which are incompletions. Waller has already been targeted seven times today. The results: one catch for 13 yards.

Carr was later sacked for a 12-yard loss to end the following drive. The Raiders quarterback is 3 of 11 for 29 yards with 12:17 remaining in the second quarter.

No running back issues for Ravens

New Ravens starting RB Ty'Son Williams puts Baltimore on the board with a serpentine 35-yard touchdown run with 2:35 to play in the first quarter. The run, on 4th and 1, capped a six-play, 65-yard drive and put the Ravens up 7-0.

Williams saw his first career carries and first career TD on that drive (he didn't have any carries last season). He has 64 all-purpose yards through one quarter.

How the Raiders are implementing their proof of vaccination requirement

The Raiders weren’t technically the first team to require vaccine proof to attend games this season — the Saints implemented a similar policy first before their opener on Sunday was relocated to Jacksonville — but the Raiders were the first to incentivize it by allowing fully vaccinated fans to attend games without masks.

Those fans were required on Monday to use CLEAR Health Pass or come in for in-person screenings on Saturday and Sunday in order to provide proof of their vaccination status. Those who are partially vaccinated are still able to attend games, but they have to wear masks in the stands. The Raiders also offer vaccinations at Allegiant Stadium for unvaccinated fans.

Though most of the work was done ahead of time, there was still an extra step to get entry to the stadium. Fans still had to show their vaccination proof in addition to getting their tickets scanned, so it took a little longer than usual. Throw in gameday traffic, and it made sense that when players took the field for warmups about an hour before kickoff, many seats in the stands were still empty.

The 65,000-seat stadium is still expected to host a sellout crowd, which is good news for a Raiders team that went 2-6 in their empty home stadium last season. They’ll need much more than a noisy audience to knock off the Ravens, of course, but every advantage counts.

Raiders predictions and 10 observations as Allegiant Stadium gets ready to rock

Raiders predictions and 10 observations as Allegiant Stadium gets ready to rock

The Raiders’ offensive line will be thrown into the fire and has a chance to make a statement.

The starting unit never played together in the preseason but has jelled throughout OTAs and training camp. John Simpson will step in as the starter at left guard and, even if he’s serviceable, he hasn’t proven to be the same caliber of player as Richie Incognito. Throw in center Andre James and right tackle Alex Leatherwood, and the Raiders are starting three inexperienced O-linemen to begin the season. The unit is facing a tough test in Week 1 against the Ravens’ front, which lost Yannick Ngakoue and Matt Judon but still has depth and talented players such as Calais Campbell, Patrick Queen, Brandon Williams, Justin Houston and Pernell McPhee.

Additionally, the Ravens blitzed on 45.5 percent of their defensive snaps last season, the most of any team, and frequently use stunts, twists and blitzes in order to create havoc.

Three questions for the Ravens as they kick off their season

Three questions for the Ravens as they kick off their season

Let’s get the ball rolling here with three questions ahead of Ravens-Raiders tonight:

-How will the offense look after such a challenging summer? Quarterback Lamar Jackson missed time with COVID-19. The three running backs projected to make the team in July all sustained season-ending injuries. Four of the team’s top five receivers didn’t practice much or play in the preseason. The offensive line wasn’t settled until just recently. The pressure will be on Jackson to make it all work.

-Can Ty’Son Williams handle the bulk of the running back workload? He’s going to have to. The team’s other running backs have been in the organization for less than a week. The Ravens like Williams’ vision and how he gets downhill, but even they are curious about how he’ll handle facing a starting defense on a big stage. Williams hasn’t played in a full game since tearing his ACL in September 2019, when he was at BYU.

-How will the Ravens deal with Raiders tight end Darren Waller? If the Ravens were planning on having top cornerback Marlon Humphrey consistently match up with Waller, Marcus Peters’ season-ending injury probably impacts that thinking. The best bet is the Ravens will show Waller a bunch of different looks that will probably include a few of their young defensive backs.

MNF is a chance for early proof of concept for Raiders

MNF is a chance for early proof of concept for Raiders

Tonight is a big night in Las Vegas solely because of the fans getting their first taste of real NFL football (sorry, preseason doesn’t count). But it could be a real big night for the Raiders if they can beat the Ravens on Monday Night Football and validate some of their confidence coming out of training camp.

A win over the Ravens would mean that the offseason moves to improve the defense may actually pay off this time. That not only are Yannick Ngakoue and Maxx Crosby the best pass-rushing duo the team has had in a while, but a linebacker unit recently fortified by the signing of K.J. Wright might be a team strength — this after two decades of futility at the position.

And it might also mean that that a pile of high draft picks in the secondary might actually pan out.

A win over the Ravens also would indicate that an offense led by Derek Carr, Darren Waller and Josh Jacobs (sick but trending toward playing) can again be a top-10 offense. If, of course, they prove formidable enough to beat a top defense that will surely blitz an unproven offensive line.

And last but not least, a win Monday would mean the Raiders weren’t the only team in the AFC West to lose their season opener.

Raiders running back Josh Jacobs' status was questionable due to an illness (not related to COVID-19) ahead of the team's opener against the Ravens. He went through the team's walkthrough practice this morning, however, and is on track to play, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Jacobs rushed for 1,065 yards and 12 touchdowns on 273 carries for the Raiders last year.

Devonta Freeman, Le'Veon Bell not playing for Ravens tonight

The Ravens activated safety Anthony Levine Sr. and defensive tackle Justin Ellis, meaning newly signed running backs Le'Veon Bell and Devonta Freeman are inactive.

So, Baltimore rolls with Ty'Son Williams, Latavius Murray and Trenton Cannon at running back against the Raiders after an injury-filled training camp at the position.

The Ravens also didn't announce any 53-man moves, leaving their roster at 51. Given how tight they are against cap, they didn't want to guarantee any more vet contracts, which adding somebody to 53-man ahead of Week 1 would have done. Expect them to fill those 53-man spots this week. With only 51 players on the roster, that leaves the Ravens needing to make just five players inactive tonight.

Lamar Jackson, Raiders defensive coordinator Gus Bradley meet again

Lamar Jackson, Raiders defensive coordinator Gus Bradley meet again

Raiders defensive coordinator Gus Bradley is credited for being the first defensive coordinator to shut down Lamar Jackson and the Ravens’ run game.

Bradley’s 2018 San Diego Chargers defense held the Ravens to 90 rushing yards and forced three turnovers in a 23-17 road victory in an AFC divisional-round playoff contest. A main factor in the Chargers’ success was Bradley keeping six defensive backs on the field to match up against Jackson and the Ravens’ speed.

The Ravens have seen that and plenty of other defensive schemes over the years aimed at containing Jackson. If Bradley opts to go small again, the Ravens are plenty equipped to combat that by going big with multi-tight end looks and a heavy dose of fullback Patrick Ricard. The Raiders’ run defense, by the way, wasn’t good last year, but they did make quite a few changes.

The Athletic's Ravens writer Jeff Zrebiec has more storylines to watch ahead of tonight's game.

And sure, Jackson’s contract extension will be a talking point all season long. It doesn’t mean general manager Eric DeCosta isn't busy locking up pieces surrounding the star quarterback, evidenced by the Mark Andrews extension.

Can the Ravens live up to their past?

The Ravens were decimated by injury last Thursday, and prior to that saw significant offseason turnover on their defense — particularly the pass rush.

But Baltimore has seen changes before, and it has rolled with them. The Ravens have won their past five season openers and haven't given up more than 10 points in any of those games. They have outscored Week 1 opponents 177-26 in that span.
