Notre Dame vs. Florida State live score, updates, highlights from 2021 season opener - Sporting News

No. 9 Notre Dame faces Florida State on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. ET at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida. The game will be televised by ABC.

The Fighting Irish, who advanced to the College Football Playoff semifinals last season, are seeking their fifth straight 10-win campaign under coach Brian Kelly. Notre Dame is in a season of transition after it lost nine starters on offense and defensive coordinator Clark Lea, who led the team to a top-15 scoring defense nationally over the last three seasons.

However, given its returning and incoming talent, Notre Dame is expected to compete at a high level, even with four ranked opponents entering Week 1 on its schedule.

Florida State, which is entering its second year under coach Mike Norvell, finished 3-6 last year and is seeking its first winning season since 2017. The Seminoles signed the No. 11 recruiting class nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite, and brought in several notable transfers, including senior quarterback McKenzie Milton — who previously finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting at UCF in 2018 — and senior defensive linemen Jermaine Johnson and Keir Thomas, who transferred from Georgia and South Carolina, respectively.

Live updates will begin around kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET

9:00 p.m. Notre Dame junior safety Kyle Hamilton picked off Travis at Florida State's 48-yard line, and the Fighting Irish will take over.

8:53 p.m.: NOTRE DAME FIELD GOAL. Senior kicker Jonathan Doerer converts a 48-yard field goal, and Notre Dame has cut its deficit to 14-10 with 5:02 left in the second quarter. Doerer's kick capped off a 10-play, 46-yard drive for the Fighting Irish.

Coan is up to 117 yards and one touchdown on 10-of-13 passing. Travis has completed 4-of-7 passes for 37 yards for Florida State.

8:42 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN FLORIDA STATE. On a fake hand-off to Corbin, Travis found the right corner of the end zone to give the Seminoles the lead. It was a four-play, 45-yard drive from Florida State over a 1:39 span. The Seminoles lead, 14-7, with 10:05 left in the second quarter.

Some notable stats: Florida State is leading Notre Dame in total yards, 138 to 125, including a 101-31 edge in rushing yards. The Fighting Irish are 0-of-5 on third down while the Seminoles are 1-of-4.

8:38 p.m.: Notre Dame went three-and-out. On third-and-5 from their own 12-yard line, the Fighting Irish recovered a fumble, leading to a punt that was downed by Florida State at its 45-yard line.

8:31 p.m.: Travis was sacked by Notre Dame sophomore defensive lineman Rylie Mills. The play was initially ruled a fumble returned for a touchdown for the Fighting Irish, though the play was overturned once officials observed that Travis' knee was down before he released the ball. The Seminoles then punted 36 yards to Notre Dame's 7-yard line two plays later.

FIRST QUARTER: Notre Dame 7, Florida State 7

8:22 p.m.: Florida State forced a Notre Dame turnover on downs at the Seminoles' 44-yard line. Coan found Williams for a completion on fourth-and-1, though Williams could not get to the first down marker.

8:14 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN FLORIDA STATE. Sophomore running back Jashaun Corbin took an 89-yard run to the house for the Seminoles' first score. It came on second-and-10 and was part of a two-play, 89-yard drive for Florida State. The Seminoles and Fighting Irish are tied at seven with 5:12 left in the first quarter.

8:09 p.m.: Coan's pass to Mayer on third-and-7 was dropped, leading to a 31-yard punt from Notre Dame junior Jay Bramblett to Florida State's 11-yard line. The Fighting Irish still lead, 7-0, with 5:31 left in the first quarter.

8:05 p.m.: Notre Dame went three-and-out on its ensuing offensive possession. Then, Florida State had a third-and-6 opportunity from its own 19-yard line before Travis was sacked by Fighting Irish senior defensive end Jayson Ademilola and sophomore linebacker JD Bertrand. Following a false start on the Seminoles, Mastromanno punted 54 yards to sophomore running back Kyren Williams, who returned the football four yards to Notre Dame's 44-yard line.

7:56 p.m.: Florida State had a three-play, minus-10 yard drive, with an ineligible man downfield penalty negating a 10-yard completion to junior wide receiver Keyshawn Helton on second-and-15. Seminole redshirt freshman Alex Mastromanno punted 44 yards from Florida State's 10-yard line to Notre Dame's 46-yard line.

7:48 p.m.: TOUCHDOWN NOTRE DAME. Fighting Irish senior quarterback Jack Coan found sophomore tight end Michael Mayer for a 41-yard touchdown on fourth-and-1 from Florida State's 41-yard line. It was a five-play, 75-yard drive for Notre Dame. Mayer also had a 25-yard reception earlier in the series. Notre Dame leads, 7-0, with 12:49 left in the first quarter.

7:45 p.m.: Notre Dame won the toss, elected to receive and will start with the football at its own 25-yard line.

7:30 p.m.: Travis has been confirmed as the Seminoles' starting quarterback against Notre Dame.

Florida State will be honoring former coach Bobby Bowden, who passed away in August, with an on-field logo, helmet decal and patch on polo shirts worn by coaches, according to Bleacher Report.
