Michigan vs. Western Michigan score predictions from MLive’s beat writers - MLive.com

Michigan is 7-0 all-time against Western Michigan, but could the Broncos pull off the upset Saturday at Michigan Stadium, or at least keep it close?

Below are score predictions from MLive’s three Wolverines beat writers and Western Michigan writer Patrick Nothaft.

The Wolverines will be debuting a new-look defense under first-year coordinator Mike Macdonald and will be looking to bounce back after last year’s 2-4 record, the program’s worst under Jim Harbaugh.

The Broncos jumped out to a roaring start in 2020 with four straight wins but lost their final two games. However, they return a majority of starters on both sides of the ball, including standout quarterback Kaleb Eleby.

Kickoff is slated for noon on ESPN.

Ryan Zuke

The great unknown for the Wolverines is how their new defensive scheme will translate against other competition. Eleby is the real deal and is protected by an experienced offensive line. I think the Broncos will be able to score some points against this Michigan defense, but the Wolverines’ offense will carry them to a season-opening victory. Expect the team to debut a much-improved run game, with Cade McNamara making a few key throws to move the chains. Prediction: Michigan 38, Western Michigan 24

Aaron McMann

Michigan should win this game handily, but its defense — and how quickly they can figure things out — is going to determine that. The Broncos have an efficient quarterback and experienced offensive line, so they should be able to score some points. But the Wolverines’ offense should be enough to pull away in the second half. Prediction: Michigan 37, Western Michigan 24

Andrew Kahn

The fans go wild for the opening kickoff. Michigan looks improved, on both sides of ball, from what we saw most of last season. The Western Michigan offense hits some big plays and scores late to make the game seem closer than it really was. Prediction: Michigan 31, Western Michigan 17

Patrick Nothaft

WMU’s offense should be able to score some points against a Michigan defense that wasn’t great against the pass last year and is in its first game under new coordinator Mike Macdonald. The key will be protecting quarterback Kaleb Eleby long enough to let the long pass plays develop, and that’s no easy task against a unit that features one of the nation’s best pass rushers in Aidan Hutchinson.

On the other side of the ball, I think Michigan should be able to move the ball on the ground until WMU stacks the box, at which point Cade McNamara should be able to find favorable matchups and build some confidence heading into Week 2. Prediction: Michigan 45, Western Michigan 21
