OOLTEWAH, Tenn. -- South Carolina men's golf opens the 2021-22 season on Monday at the Scenic City Collegiate. It's a strong field that features six SEC teams along with Clemson and Virginia from the ACC."We're looking forward to getting our season started this week at the Scenic City Collegiate," said head coach Bill McDonald. "The Honors Course is one of the best courses in the country and I'm sure it will be a great test for our team. We had a very competitive qualifier for this event and I feel like the guys are sharp and ready to play."
All-American Ryan Hall and junior Jack Wall man the top two spots in the lineup. North Greenville transfer Evans Lewis will make his debut in Garnet and Black. Sophomore Rafe Reynolds and true freshman Gene Zeigler are also slated to play after impressive rounds in the team's final stage of qualifying last week at Columbia Country Club. The highly-touted Zeigler, a Florence native, was the SCJGA's top-ranked player in the state.
Chattanooga is the host school this week at a prestigious venue, The Honors Course, considered by many the top-ranked golfing venue in the state of Tennessee and a top-100 golf course in the country. The private club was created in 1983 to honor the amateur golfer. The Pete Dye designed championship golf course was considered radical in the 1980's because of its acres of tall, native-grass rough, unusual Zoysia grass fairways and fast greens. The Honors Course has hosted a plethora of major amateur events over the years including the NCAA Championship twice (1996 and 2010), the Curtis Cup, the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Junior Amateur.
The par-72 layout will play 7,376 yards this week. It's a shotgun start at 8 a.m. ET on Monday as teams will play 36 holes on day one of the event.
