Carlos Carrasco’s standard first inning struggles started immediately Thursday night, as Miguel Rojas hit his first pitch of the game out of the park. Two batters later, the Marlins had extended their lead to 2-0.
Carrasco escaped the inning without further damage, and Jonathan Villar matched Rojas’s feat, sending Sandy Alcantra’s first pitch to the Shea Bridge to cut the deficit in half.
The starters would settle in, with Alcantra retiring nine in a row entering the bottom of the fourth. Brandon Nimmo would lead that inning off with an infield single, advancing to second on a poor throw by Isan Diaz (in a game that featured some poor defense on both sides). Then the inning became the Francisco Lindor show, as the shortstop doubled to the wall in left to plate Nimmo, then drew a balk on Alcantra after advancing to third to put the Mets ahead 3-2.
In the top of the sixth, the Marlins would put two on with one out against Carrasco, bringing on Aaron Loup in relief. For a rare occasion Loup would blink—walking two to plate the tying run—but rebounding to retire the final two and escape further damage.
In the seventh, the Mets would put together three consecutive singles to score the eventual winning run. Jeff McNeil would start it off, advancing to third on Patrick Mazeika’s single—and a subsequent misplay by right fielder Jesus Sanchez—before coming around to score on a Dom Smith pinch hit single. Trevor May and Edwin Diaz would close out the game and the Mets’ weather-abridged three game sweep of the Marlins.
