Alabama vs. Miami live score, updates, highlights from 2021 Chick-fil-A Kickoff game - Sporting News

Coming off an undefeated national title, No 1. Alabama will open its season against No. 14 Miami in Atlanta for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game.

The Crimson Tide are favored by 19.5 points per FanDuel, despite losing 10 key players to the 2021 NFL Draft, including Patriots quarterback Mac Jones and Heisman Trophy winner Devonta Smith. Alabama is premiering a largely new offense, with sophomore Bryce Young leading as quarterback.

Alabama holds a 14-3 series edge over Miami, and is 14-0 in season openers under coach Nick Saban. The last meeting between these two teams took place in the 1993 Sugar Bowl, with the No. 2-ranked Crimson Tide beating No. 1 Miami 34-13 for the national title. This is the first regular-season matchup between the Canes and Alabama since 1979.

Miami’s offense will rely on quarterback D’Eriq King, as he makes his return from a torn ACL. He will have to face the experienced Alabama defense, which returns several starters from the 2020 unit that helped lead all SEC defenses in scoring.

The Canes defense struggled to stop the run last season and surrendered around 174.5 yards per game. Against ranked opponents, Miami gave up 314.3 rushing yards per matchup. Defensive end Jahfari Harvey, converted linebacker Zach McCloud and Tennessee transfer Deandre Johnson are slated to fill the void left behind, but will likely scramble to stop the Alabama offense.
