Tigers score early, cruise past Eagles - The Edwardsville Intelligencer

EDWARDSVILLE – Tatum VanRyswyk is making Edwardsville coach Lori Blade’s job harder with each passing game.

That’s a good thing.

VanRyswyk drove in a pair of first-inning runs Wednesday against Columbia to help the Tigers to a 5-0 victory over the Eagles in non-conference action inside the District 7 Sports Complex.

“I think I’m finally proving myself. Coach has been telling me what to do, and I think I’m finally doing it,” VanRyswyk said.

VanRyswyk is hitting .500 (6 for 12) in her last four games with two RBIs. It comes after only making an appearance as a pinch-runner in the win over Belleville East on April 27.

“She’s hitting the ball well and seeing it well,” Edwardsville coach Lori Blade said of her junior shortstop. “It’s tough to write a lineup each day with this group. They’re making my job tough, which is a good problem to have. We have kids challenging each other.

“When they get the opportunity to play, they need to make the most of it. Tatum has done exactly that.”

Edwardsville (9-0) is off to its best start since winning the first 13 games of the 2012 season.

The Tigers got off to a quick start against the Eagles, who are now 7-5.

Lexi Gorniak lined a one-out single to right and Brooke Tolle worked a two-out walk in the first inning. After a fielder’s indifference moved Tolle up to second, VanRyswyk came through with a two-run single to center for the 2-0 lead.

“They were throwing me outside until I got a good pitch to hit inside,” VanRyswyk said. “It was good to get an early lead and set the tone.”

EHS delivered the knockout blow to Columbia starter Ava Khoury with three runs on four hits in the second.

Sam Sanders singled to start the inning and scored on Lexie Griffin’s RBI double off the fence in left field to make it 3-0.

It was Griffin’s fifth RBI of the season. In 17 at-bats this season, she’s hitting .529 with seven extra-base hits from the bottom of the lineup.

With two outs, Gorniak doubled in courtesy runner Grace Blakemore and Sydney Lawrence followed with an RBI single to center for the 5-0 lead.

“(Khoury) throws the ball well and moves it around. We were able to get on her early there,” Blade said.

Khoury went 1.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits and a walk.

The Edwardsville offense went cold against reliever Julia Foster over the final 4.1 innings. She didn’t allow a hit and walked three.

“(Foster) did a nice job of moving it around, and she got some calls on the corner,” Blade said. “We need to be able to sustain the mentality at the plate throughout the game.”

Gorniak finished with two of Edwardsville’s six hits. She’s on a six-game hitting streak and is now batting .467 with seven RBIs.

Avery Hamilton earned the win for the Tigers. She went four innings and allowed four hits with four strikeouts.

Hamilton worked out of a jam in the first inning after K Ohlendorf and K Cleveland started the game with back-to-back singles. Hamilton got a pair of strikeouts and a pop-up to end the threat.

“That was a tough start. They hit a couple pretty hard and then we settled in. She threw some really good pitches in the first inning or we could have been in some big trouble,” Blade said.

In the fourth, Columbia loaded the bases with one out but Hamilton was able to get an out at home on a comebacker and a fly out to end the inning.

Tolle pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three, and Ryleigh Owens worked around a hit in the seventh to finish off the win.
