With one out in the eighth inning and the Yankees trailing by two, Torres raced to second on a lined single up the middle by Aaron Hicks. Shortstop Carlos Correa knocked down the ball but quickly recovered when Torres dashed to third, which was left open because a shift left third baseman Alex Bregman out of position.
With no one to throw to until catcher MartÃn Maldonado arrived at third, Correa had no choice but to hold onto the ball. Torres saw another opportunity -- no one covering home -- and darted to the plate, sliding home without a throw to cut the Yankees' deficit to 5-4.
