Fort Worth’s Rockwood Park Golf Course was ranked second in the state by a Dallas Morning News panel that selected the top 25 economy golf courses in Texas.

The Morning News’ 91 Texas golf panel members were given a ballot of 288 courses and asked to rate them on a 10-point scale. Panel members are golf professionals, golf course architects, superintendents, people involved in the golf course industry and amateurs. Criteria used include versatility, shotmaking, design, beauty, maintenance and overall memorability.

Rockwood Park also ranked No. 24 statewide in courses open to the public, beating out Cowboys Golf Club in Grapevine, Stonebriar in Frisco and Texas Star in Euless.

In addition, Rockwood Park ranked No. 84 overall for all courses in the state, including country clubs. Other local courses that made the rankings: Colonial, No. 5; Shady Oaks, No. 14; Mira Vista, No. 59; and River Crest, No. 93

“The Rockwood Park Golf Course has been a community favorite since it opened for play in 1938, and the recent enhancements undoubtedly make it one of the best municipal golf facilities in North Texas,” Mayor Betsy Price said.

The original Rockwood Park Golf Course was designed by golf course architect John Bredemus, with subsequent upgrades by golf course architect Ralph Plummer. Beginning in November 2015, the course underwent a $5.1 million renovation led by the design team of John Colligan and associate Trey Kemp. The renovation included a new routing plan with new greens, tees, fairways, bunkering system, drainage and cart paths. The course was lengthened to play up to 7,053 yards.

This spring, a new clubhouse opened at Rockwood Park. The $7.7 million clubhouse contains an upper level featuring a pro shop, grill, dining area and a multipurpose room. The lower level houses convenient cart storage and repairs.

“The City of Fort Worth’s commitment to providing a first-class golf experience has led to Rockwood Park’s continuous improvement and current status as one of the best public courses in the state,” said Dave Lewis, assistant director of the Park & Recreation Department. “Our maintenance staff has been able to maintain the course at a very high level, and our pro shop staff provides an excellent experience.

“Players love the layout and high-quality, consistent greens here,”: Lewis said. “Add in amazing views of the city and a new clubhouse, you can see why Rockwood Park has been named one of the best public courses in the state.”

Rockwood Park Golf Course is at 1851 Jacksboro Hwy.
