The Mets beat the Marlins 6-5 in a wild extra-inning affair in Miami. The Mets jumped out to an early 2-0 against Marlins opener John Curtiss. Francisco Lindor smacked an RBI double that drove in Jonathan Villar to put the Mets on the board. Lindor then scored while tagging up on a fly ball when the throw from the outfield to third base got away from Brian Anderson.
Marcus Stroman gave a run back in the second and worked around some traffic on the bases early, but settled in to have a strong outing, at one point striking out five Marlins in a row. The Mets added to their lead in the fourth with a Tomás Nido RBI double. In the bottom of the seventh, Stroman issued a leadoff walk to Anderson—his first walk of the night—and Luis Rojas pulled him from the game after just 89 pitches. That decision proved to be costly, as Miguel Castro came in the game and gave up a game-tying homer to Garrett Cooper.
The game would remain tied until the twelfth, as Mets relievers pulled Houdini act after Houdini act and the Marlins completely emptied their bullpen. The Marlins were forced to send Adam Cimber—their last reliever standing—back out for a second inning of work in the top of the twelfth. With two men on and one out, Khalil Lee, who had been 0-for-8 with eight strikeouts to start his big league career, made his first major league hit a huge one. His double snapped the tie and put the Mets ahead 4-3. Johneshwy Fargas—another unlikely hero—followed with triple that drove in two more runs. The Mets may have added more still, but as the ball skidded away from the sliding Adam Duvall in the outfield, Fargas was thrown out at home plate trying to stretch his triple to an inside the park home run.
The Mets would need every bit of that 6-3 cushion, as it turned out. Aaron Loup surrendered two runs in the bottom of the twelfth, but then induced a key double play grounder off the bat of Corey Dickerson and Jacob Barnes came in to retire Duvall and put the capper on this insane night in Miami.
