**UPDATE: Alabama beats Kentucky, 4-3 in thriller**
The NCAA softball tournament rolls on with Alabama opening super regional play at noon CT Friday against Kentucky. It’s Game 1 of a best-of-three series with the Wildcats in Rhoads Stadium. We’ll have all the updates, just refresh the page for the latest.
Final score: Alabama 4, Kentucky 3
Seventh inning
Top: Fouts is fired up with her 10th strikeout before Abernathy hit her second homer to center to cut into the Tide lead. It’s 4-3 Alabama with one out in the seventh. Kentucky had two on, one out before a fly ball to center put two outs on the board with UK’s best batter coming to plate. Alabama instead opts to intentionally walk Kowalik and bring the tying run to third and go-ahead run to second. A 3-2 strikeout ends it and Alabama wins.
Sixth inning
Top: Fouts got her eighth strikeout to open the sixth. Her ninth ended it as she finishes the inning with 111 pitches (77 for strikes).
Bottom: Jenna Johnson led off with a single to short but she was stranded at second bringing Kentucky up for a last crack at extending this one.
Fifth inning
Top: Fouts sat down the Wildcats in order on her 100th pitch of the game. She’s doing the job but they’re making her work.
Bottom: Hemphill drew a two-out walk but Tow struck out to end the inning with Alabama still up 4-2.
Fourth inning
Top: Fouts was cruising in the fourth until Abernathy worked a long at-bat. She ended it with a homer crushed to center to make it 2-0 Kentucky. Fouts has thrown 85 pitches (58 strikes) through four with seven strikeouts and two earned runs.
Bottom: Hemphill has the first Alabama hit of the game, a well-struck single to left. That was followed by an infield single by Tow and a sharp single to center by Johnson so Alabama has the bases loaded and one out. KB Sides unloaded them with a three-run triple and it’s 3-2 Alabama. And Madi Morgan’s single to the right side brought Sides in to make it 4-2 Alabama. The Tide had five hits and four big runs in the fourth to change the feel of a game that wasn’t trending the right way for the home team.
Third inning
Top: The scoreless streak for Alabama pitchers ends at 30 2/3 innings as Kentucky scores a two-out single by Spangler and it’s 1-0 Kentucky. A strikeout ends the threat there.
Bottom: Taylor Clark put a charge into a deep ball to right but it was caught at the wall. Brown grounded to short as the Tide went hitless in the first time through the lineup.
Second inning
Top: Fouts’ second strikeout starts the inning and her third ended it. Kentucky is making her work, however. She’s thrown 43 pitches through two innings, 29 of which were strikes.
Bottom: Kentucky’s Humes is dealing right now, striking out the side in the second with four straight overall. She’s thrown just 30 pitches with 20 strikes.
First inning
Top: A lead-off single from Kowalik didn’t yield a run as she was stranded a third. Fouts got one strikeout in the frame as the Tide comes to the plate.
Bottom: Alabama went down in order ending with a Tow strikeout. Mack worked a full count before grounding to third to lead off.
Montana Fouts (24-3, 1.44 ERA) will get the start for Alabama while Autumn Humes (22-8, 2.25 ERA) will start for Kentucky.
