Cowley College’s Sumner Campus in Wellington, KS, recently hosted The Difficult Airway Course: EMS on May 20-21. A total of 32 students completed the intensive two-day course.
During the course students learned the full range of airway management techniques — including use of video laryngoscopes and other advanced imaging devices, extra glottic devices, medication-assisted intubation and surgical airways. The course combined classroom lectures with hands-on skills stations and small-group workshop stations to offer a safe, no-risk learning environment for all students. Participants were able to learn techniques, practice with equipment, and apply their new knowledge to simulated patient scenarios including trauma patients, complex medical patients, and other challenging patient presentations.
In addition to the Cowley Paramedic Program faculty, course faculty included emergency medicine physicians, flight paramedics/nurses, nurse anesthetists, and advanced practice nurses. The course faculty currently practice in a variety of clinical settings ranging from high volume EMS systems to critical care flight systems and emergency departments.
The EMS Education program at Cowley began offering The Difficult Airway Course: EMS in 2011 and is the only approved training center for the course in Kansas. Cowley’s Paramedic Program is one of only a handful of programs in the nation that have integrated this course into the initial training curriculum; all Cowley College Paramedic students complete this course prior to graduation.
Along with the Cowley Paramedic Program students in attendance, the course included EMS and healthcare professionals from Butler County EMS, Wellington Fire/EMS, Salina Fire Department, Miami County EMS, Ellis County EMS, William Newton Hospital, and participants from Oklahoma, Texas, Iowa, New Mexico and Guam.
