Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - An Olmsted County judge today followed the terms of a renegotiated plea agreement with a former employee of the Somerby Golf Club in Byron by sentencing 64-year-old Gordon Perkins to 45 months in prison.
Perkins, who now has an Albertville address, last month pleaded guilty to four counts of felony theft by swindle for stealing almost $500,000 from the private golf course. The criminal complaint alleged the thefts began in 2012 and ran through last year when the general manager noticed a significant amount of unauthorized charges on Somerby's credit card accounts. Perkins, who worked as the controller of the golf club's finances, was fired after he was confronted about the charges.
The plea agreement calls for Perkins to pay close to $500,000 in restitution, but the judge in the case reserved a decision on the issue and pending civil litigation relating to insurance coverage. A previous plea agreement was rejected by the judge, who expressed concerns the proposed punishment was inadequate considering the size of the theft.
