Tigers’ summer camp nearing finish line: 5 takeaways, box score from Friday - mlive.com

DETROIT -- The biggest takeaway from Friday night was who didn’t play: Scheduled starter Jordan Zimmermann, who was held out with forearm tightness.

But Tyler Alexander, his potential replacement, gutted through a tough inning and salvaged an encouraging start from what could have been a really bad one.

Alexander is at the top of our takeaways. Scroll to the bottom to see the box score from Friday’s six-inning game.

1. Fighting through it.

Everything went wrong for Alexander in a first inning in which he allowed three runs on five hits (four singles and a double) and a walk.

But after being bailed out of the first when he hit his pitch limit (a courtesy that won’t be extended to him in the regular season), he retired nine of the next 10 batters he faced, striking out four of them.

2. He wasn’t the only one.

Reliever John Schreiber had an even worse inning and it looked like he was finished after getting pounded for four doubles and a home run in the third.

But the Tigers gave him a chance to pitch another inning and end on a high note. He retired the side 1-2-3 in the fourth, striking out two.

3. Velo concerns.

It might be a slow gun, but some Tigers’ pitchers are a tick or two away from their normal velocity.

Some might not fully built up. Others might be a bit tired after three weeks of throwing in the hot sun.

And others, like prospect Franklin Perez, are coming back from injury. His fastball ranged from 89-92 mph on Friday.

“His velo’s going to get a little higher, I’m hoping, back to the mid 90s,” Gardenhire said.

Perez has struck out just one batter through five innings of work in three intrasquad games this summer.

4. Cron crushing.

Tigers first baseman C.J. Cron hit his fourth home run of the intrasquad season Friday, crushing a ball into the second section of seats in left field against Schreiber.

Cron would have five home runs if he hadn’t been robbed by Riley Greene five days ago.

5. Injury updates.

The Tigers had three outfielders sidelined on Friday, so Harold Castro played center field for the first time in the summer season.

JaCoby Jones (oblique) could have returned but is being held out as a precaution, Gardenhire said. He hasn’t played since leaving a game July 13. Travis Demeritte (groin/calf) last played on July 9. He’s at “80 percent,” according to Gardenhire. Derek Hill, who left Thursday’s game with a balky knee, still has a contusion and soreness.

The Tigers will scale back on Saturday. Instead of an intrasquad, veterans will be able to take voluntary batting practice if they choose and young players will participate in live batting practice or a simulated game.

The final intrasquad will likely be on Sunday with a short workout on Monday. Then the Tigers will travel to Cincinnati to play exhibitions on Tuesday and Wednesday. They will get an off day on Thursday before opening the season Friday night at Great American Ballpark.
