The Mercer County Freeholders voted tonight to purchase the Hopewell Valley Golf and Country Club, which has been vacant since fall of 2019.
The resolution, which passed 7-0, reads as follows: “County Executive and Clerk to the Board authorized to execute an agreement of sale, and an access agreement for pre-acquisition maintenance, for the purchase of property commonly known as the Hopewell Valley Golf and Country Club, located at Block 34, lot 3 and block 37, lot 6 in Hopewell Township. Total County cost for acquisition not to exceed $1,900,000.00.”

The Club had closed last fall after it failed NJ DEP water standards test.
As reported by MercerMe, the Township Committee also considered purchasing the property. Ultimately, the Township did not pursue purchase, but the Committee did agree that the property should be preserved.
In an email to MercerMe after the Freeholder meeting this evening, Township Committee member Kevin Kuchinski said:
“We have been working since 2015 to ensure that the Hopewell Valley Golf Club remains a viable golf course and is not repurposed as a new mega-development in the heart of Hopewell Valley. Developers like Toll Brothers would have liked to have seen hundreds of new homes in this space.
We were thrilled to see the Mercer County Freeholders move ahead tonight to acquire the course and look forward to seeing the course preserved, revitalized and re-opened to the public. We have a strong partnership with the Mercer County leadership and want to thank them for their help in moving forward to protect and preserve the golf course.
“We look forward to seeing the Hopewell Valley Golf Course re-open.”
