'An exciting day for Bermuda': Baden company inks deal - The New Hamburg Independent

Baden-based Saturn Power locked down a deal recently to provide a six-megawatt solar power project to Bermuda.

The deal is one of three awarded to provide bulk solar generation on the island as Bermuda moves forward on their sustainable energy plans.

“When we started Saturn Power, our goal as a company was to advance the use of clean, renewable energy in Ontario in order to do our part to help create a more sustainable environment for future generations,” said Doug Wagner, CEO of Saturn Power Inc.

“Having the ability to now extend those efforts to additional locations around the globe, including Bermuda, has been a very rewarding experience and one that Saturn is very proud of.”

In a signing ceremony in Hamilton, Bermuda on June 6, the deputy premier of Bermuda, the Hon. Walter H. Roban, JP, MP, called it “an exciting day for Bermuda,” as it marked the beginning of the solar photovoltaic plant located near the L.F. Wade International Airport. Saturn Power began construction on the plant in 2019.

Saturn Power was one of nine candidates bidding on the development of the solar project, according to the Government of Bermuda website. They came in as the lowest bidder at 10.3 cents per kilowatt-hour, as well as fulfilling obligations to hire local workers.

“This license has been the culmination of significant work and diligence on both sides and we are very proud and grateful to be entrusted with providing the people of Bermuda with access to clean, sustainable power for decades to come,” stated Wagner in a release.

The government anticipates that the replacement of fuel costs with solar power will keep an estimated 20 million dollars or more in the local economy. It will also keep rate payer’s electricity bills stable for the next 20 years.

“I am particularly pleased with the fulfilment of a sustainable agenda with this new solar farm,” said Roban.

“It fulfils all the goals of a sustainable project in providing social, economic and environmental benefit. We are pleased to be working with Saturn Power and look forward to more clean, renewable energy for the benefit of all of Bermuda.”
