A new private-public partnership will use virtual reality technology to help train Alabama’s workforce.

JumpStartAL will roll out at five Alabama community colleges this year to start, offering free training to anyone interested in a job in skilled trade positions. Officials say the program will use virtual reality training to help Alabama meet its goal of increasing the state’s cohort of highly skilled workers by a half-million by 2025.

The program also comes at a crucial time for the state, when its workforce is reeling from measures to control the outbreak of COVID-19. More than 650,000 Alabamians have filed for unemployment since mid-March.

At the same time, an estimated 40 percent of the workforce is expected to retire within the next ten years, with some industries worried that the workers coming after lack the skills needed for those jobs.

Virtual reality is the term for computer simulations used in everything from computer games to the kind of hands-on job training JumpStartAL envisions. The virtual reality component of the program is being developed by TRANSFRVR, a New York-based education technology company that has also worked on job training projects with Mazda Toyota. The company says it can create programs tailored to specific industries and needed skills.

Some of the offerings already developed will train participants on concepts such as precision measurements in manufacturing, blueprint reading and plant safety. For example, the module on plant safety features training in using personal protective equipment and common tools, and is designed for trainees with little or no experience in a manufacturing environment.

JumpStartAL will be offered first at Coastal Alabama Community College, Enterprise State, Jefferson State, Lawson State and Shelton State, with more locations to follow, organizers say. Click here to get more information and sign up.

Taking part in the project are a who’s who inside business and government job training programs: Alabama Power; Altec; Kamtek; the Alabama Community College System; Ready to Work, operated by AIDT; the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education; the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development; the Business Education Alliance; TRANSFRVR; Shelby County economic development organization 58 INC; Central Six Alabama Works, and the Alabama Department of Commerce.
