He's one of the better playmakers in MLS, but New York Red Bulls man Kaku says whenever he's back on the pitch, he wants to finish more plays off himself.
Assists have been Kaku's calling card since he joined RBNY in 2018. He dropped 14 dimes in that debut season and added six more in 21 starts last season. However, speaking to ESPN.com's Tom Marshall for an in-depth feature published on Saturday, Kaku said when we watches LAFC's Carlos Vela stuff the statsheet with gaudy scoring numbers in addition to playing a key role as a facilitator, he thinks he could play a similar, more well-rounded role if he put his mind to it.
"I'm trying to score more," Kaku told Marshall. "Many times I give passes or assists when I should finish the play myself. I think I have to think a little bit more in the moment. Sometimes, I look at Carlos Vela; he assists but he also scores goals."
Kaku has 12 goals in 4,493 MLS minutes to go along with his 20 assists.
In the story, Kaku also talks about his life in quarantine in the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as how the move to MLS changed his life. Give the whole thing a read here.
