Business Briefs: East Central Ohio SCORE honors Cohen, Carlson - The Newark Advocate

NEWARK -- East Central Ohio SCORE honored Steve Cohen and John Carlson, as well as local businesses and mentors, at its annual dinner.

Cohen, former CEO of Screen Machine Industries in Etna, was honored as the SCORE chapter’s Mentor of the Year. Carlson received the first John Carlson Award, created to honor him for more than 20 years of service to the central Ohio business community.

Mary Nutter, owner of Maylon Enterprises, was also recognized. Nutter has owned her own plumbing company for more than 10 years, and became a SCORE client last year to expand her business. She received a Small Business Association loan and was positioned to accept a major plumbing contract for the new Crew stadium in Columbus.

The local SCORE chapter fosters long-term relationships with its clients, remaining a resource for businesses at all stages, from startup to final sale. In 2019, more than 20 SCORE volunteers mentored 26 local businesses.

Barker joins HER Realtors leadership team

Columbus -- HER Realtors announced Spencer Barker, of Newark, joined the HER Realtors leadership team as regional vice president in the Licking County area.

Barker worked as a licensed agent/auctioneer at Shai Commercial Real Estate, co-owns a marketing company, and established himself in the commercial real estate industry by working on projects for Englefield Oil Company/Duchess.

He is a Newark city councilman, immediate past-president of the Newark-Heath Rotary Club, board member of the LICCO Supporting Foundation and on the governing board of his church. He is an active member of the Young Leaders of Licking County, appointed as vice president-elect/marketing and leading the development of the Young Leaders of Licking County mobile app.

In 2018, Barker was named one of the 20 under 40 honorees by The Advocate and was named the Young Leaders of Licking County Member of the Year.

Washington Auto Parts to acquire auto service facilities

SUNBURY -- Family-owned and operated Washington Auto Parts, an automotive aftermarket store group in central Ohio, announced it acquired Lexington Auto Parts, two Central Auto & Farm, and two Ohio Valley Auto & Truck locations.

Washington Auto Parts, one of the largest independent distributors of automotive parts in central Ohio, was founded in Johnstown by Ken Washington in 1977. The Lexington, Ohio-based company is co-owned and operated by Washington's sons, Mike, Bob and Jim, along with third-generation owners Matt and Corey Washington.

The acquired Central Auto & Farm locations are in Thornville and Lancaster. The Ohio Valley Auto & Truck stores are in Logan and Lancaster. The Lexington and Thornville locations will continue to operate at the existing facility with the existing team. The Logan and Lancaster Carquest stores closed for remodeling, and operate out of local NAPA stores until the new locations are ready.

The 22 Washington Auto Parts stores and distribution facility, serve Athens, Delaware, Fairfield, Hocking, Knox, Licking, Madison, Marion, Morrow, Pickaway, Perry, Richland, Union, Vinton, and Wyandot counties.

The group offers a full machine shop, including engine block work, cylinder head work, U-joint installation, press work, and turning drums and rotors. The group also specializes in agriculture, hydraulic hoses, tools, equipment, and automotive paint.

Johnstown Pointe transitional care facility approved

JOHNSTOWN -- Johnstown Pointe, an 81-bed transitional care facility, received its final approval from the village's Planning and Zoning Commission.

Construction will begin in the spring on a 58,000-square foot building at 383 W. Coshocton St., Johnstown, 

The proposed structure will feature a variety of roof forms and massing to break up the visual impact and enhance the residential character of the building. Exterior materials will include cultured stone, brick, split face block, siding and EIFS in natural stone and gray coloring.

A split-face block base and limestone water table will extend around the perimeter of the building. Brick will be featured to full height on the smaller gables with siding and EIFS on the larger gable.

Buskirk retires after 8 years as city HR director

NEWARK — Mike Buskirk, the city of Newark's human resources director for eight years, retired on March 31. No replacement has yet been announced.

Mayor Jeff Hall hired Buskirk to join his cabinet as human resources director when the mayor took office in January 2012, following the November 2011 election.

Buskirk previously worked as human resources manager for 32 years with American Electric Power, He graduated from Ohio University.
