“Highly regarded Charge It out of Travers,” by Mike MacAdam with photos from Erica Miller

The field for the 153rd Travers lost a heavy hitter on Sunday when trainer Todd Pletcher declared Charge It out of next Saturday’s $1.25 million race at Saratoga Race Course.

Charge It, a rising star who won the Dwyer by 23 lengths at Belmont Park last time out, has been suffering from a minor foot abscess, and although he is recovering quickly, he has missed some important training, including a final breeze scheduled for this weekend.

“Nest dominates again, this time in the 147th Alabama,” by Mike MacAdam with photos from Erica Miller

The people — and there had to be 100 of them — couldn’t take their eyes off Nest.

Nestled in the middle of the crowd, trainer Todd Pletcher couldn’t take his eyes off her replay.

Pletcher, one of the most visible people at Saratoga Race Course, got swallowed up in one of the biggest winner’s circle mobs you’re going to see after his 3-year-old filly put together a second dominating Saratoga performance, this time in the 147th running of the Grade I Alabama on Saturday.

“State gaming commission has learned from project attempting to locate New York-bred horses after their racing careers,” by Teresa A. Genaro with photos from Erica Miller

Seven years ago, the New York State Gaming Commission undertook a daunting mission: to locate every New York-bred Thoroughbred that raced between 2010 and 2012 and didn’t race after 2012.

A year later, in 2016, the Commission released its findings. The number of horses that fit the criteria was 3,894. The Commission was able to locate 1,871, or 48% of them. The other 2,023 couldn’t be located.

One of the motivations for beginning the project was to determine how money the New York Thoroughbred industry needs to support its retired racehorses.

“Derby winner Rich Strike thrills Reed with sharp breeze on Spa main track,” by Mike MacAdam with photos from Erica Miller

Trainer Eric Reed thought he was suffering from Slow Stopwatch Thumb on Friday morning.

And apparently it’s a contagious condition.

He didn’t believe the time he had clocked for his Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike, so he turned to assistant Sid Scott for a more accurate time, and didn’t get one.

Or so they thought.

Rich Strike breezed five furlongs in 59.82 on the Saratoga Race Course main track at 5:40 a.m., and more important than the quick time, to Reed, was the way Rich Strike comfortably did it on a track that had been considered a chore to run over.

“At the Track: Chatting with Amelia Green,” by Will Springstead with photos from Erica Miller

Exercise rider and former professional jockey Amelia Green, 29, is from Nottingham, England. Her grandfather trained National Hunt horses, and she rode show jumpers there, but decided she wanted to up her game. And a nine-week stint at the British Racing School did just that.

“Then I learned I like to go fast, so it seemed like a good fit,” she said recently.

She stayed in England for her apprenticeship and journeywoman days before going to California.

After a stint there, she landed a job with Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher. Naturally, she has ridden many good horses while working for him, but she has been the exercise rider for Life Is Good – winner of this year’s Whitney, Pegasus World Cup Invitational and 2021 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile – since the horse was transferred from Bob Baffert to Pletcher shortly over a year ago.

She talked about her life and career with The Daily Gazette recently.

“For owner Lee Einsidler, an emotional ride to Fourstardave win,” by Teresa A. Genaro with photos from Erica Miller

By most measures, Lee Einsidler lives an enviable life. The grandson of a man who ran a speakeasy during prohibition, he worked in his father’s liquor store, then rose to the top of the liquor distribution business, first as the CEO of Sidney Frank Importing Company, which created and launched Grey Goose vodka, and now as the CEO of Casamigos, the premium tequila company founded in 2013 by actor George Clooney, former model Randy Gerbe, and businessman Mike Meldman.

He grew up going to the races with his father; when his high school friends went to watch the Mets or the Yankees, Einsidler would head to Belmont or Aqueduct for Thoroughbreds, Yonkers or Roosevelt for harness racing.

“Over the years, the track has always been like the great escape for me,” he said this week. “I get to the track and I leave the trials and tribulations of life behind. The whole world could be on fire and I’d have no idea if I were at the track.”
