The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) project is a national and international education initiative to improve palliative care, in collaboration with City of Hope in Duarte, California, and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) in Washington, D.C.
The project provides training in palliative care with essential information to nursing students and practicing nurses, including undergraduate and graduate nursing faculty, continuing education providers, staff development educators, specialty nurses in pediatrics, oncology, critical care, geriatrics, and advanced practice nurses. ELNEC also welcomes other health care professionals.
Approximately 18,000 nurses and other healthcare professionals from diverse clinical backgrounds have been trained in this curriculum. ELNEC-Core is used to train staff nurses, advanced practice nurses, undergraduate and graduate nursing faculty, administrators, and researchers who work in acute care settings (i.e. medical-surgical and oncology units), clinics, homecare, hospice, and palliative care settings.
West Virginia University School of Nursing offers ELNEC training in a hybrid format where students complete the training online, in the SOLE classroom, at their own pace. There is also an interactive discussion board component. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a national certificate of training in ELNEC and also 8 hours of nursing continuing professional development. Cost for the course is $50.
