From: The Provost’s Office and Division of Information Technology

The Provost’s Office and Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS) invite submissions of proposals for grants to support the exploration of technology-enhanced approaches to teaching and learning, the expansion of flexible/online course opportunities, and collaborative research across the Commonwealth. Seed grants, curricular redesign grants, and research grants are available through the Innovation in Learning, Develop, Redesign, Innovate, Vitalize, and Enhance (DRIVE), and 4-VA programs.

Innovation in Learning (IL) grants support the evaluation and implementation of new approaches to teaching and learning using technology. These small seed grants are awarded to individuals or teams working on pedagogical and curricular projects that push the boundaries of technology-enhanced learning and have the potential for broad institutional impact. Grant awards are typically capped at $5,000. Submit a proposal.

The Develop, Redesign, Innovate, Vitalize, and Enhance (DRIVE) grants fund the creation or redesign of flexible and online learning experiences for Virginia Tech students in undergraduate and graduate programs. Grants are funded at up to $8,000 per course. Funding may be provided at the program level or for groups of courses that have a specific goal in common (e.g., four courses to create a certificate, or courses needed to complete the development of a fully online program). Funding may also be provided for individual courses if there is clear alignment with university priorities outlined in the grant submission materials. Submit a proposal. (Note: DRIVE grant proposals will also be considered for 4-VA Course Redesign funding.)

4-VA is a collaborative of Virginia Tech, College of William and Mary, George Mason University, James Madison University, Old Dominion University, University of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Virginia Military Institute, all working together to realize Virginia’s goals for higher education. Grants are intended to promote collaborations that leverage the strengths of each university. 4-VA grants at Virginia Tech support innovative approaches to collaborative endeavors, collaborative research (including complementary funds), and course redesign.

  • Collaborative Endeavors
A limited amount of 4-VA funds are available to support special projects and efforts to explore the feasibility of future research and course redesign. These smaller awards are intended to promote and support faculty activity around state-wide initiatives and Virginia Tech’s priority focus areas. Collaborative Endeavors grants are not awarded for full research projects, course/program redesign, or development projects. Submit a proposal.
  • Collaborative Research
Funding for Collaborative Research awards of up to $25,000 is available to support pilot research projects headed by a Virginia Tech faculty member collaborating with at least one faculty partner at a 4-VA member institution. Virginia Tech is most interested in collaborative research proposals that align with major research initiatives and projects that build pathways to graduate school in Virginia, such as developing new undergraduate research opportunities and synergies between 4-VA institutions or scaling up existing opportunities. Submit a proposal.
  • Complementary Funds
Proposals funded by other 4-VA institutions and naming a Virginia Tech faculty member as collaborator result in that faculty member’s eligibility for $5,000 in complementary funding. Depending on fund availability, these awards are paid after the primary 4-VA institution notifies Virginia Tech of the collaborative partnership. Submit a request.
  • Course Redesign
Course Redesign awards of up to $8,000 per course support the development or revision of programs or individual courses to achieve high-quality flexible or online learning experiences. (Note: 4-VA Course Redesign proposals will also be considered for DRIVE grant funding.)

Review of proposals will take place on a rolling basis through the deadline for submissions, Sept. 14, 2022. Awards will be announced beginning Oct. 7, 2022, for work beginning in the spring or summer of 2023.

Information sessions are scheduled via Zoom at 7:00 p.m. on Aug. 24, 25, 29, and 30, 2022. Registration is required. Registered participants must sign in at virginiatech.zoom.us using their Virginia Tech username (PID) to join a session.

During the 2021-2022 fiscal year, TLOS and the Provost's Office awarded nearly $850,000 in grants through the above programs. Innovation in Learning and DRIVE grants are funded and managed by the Provost’s Office and TLOS. 4-VA grants are funded through the Commonwealth of Virginia budget process. Submit questions, concerns, or requests for more information to TLOS’ Senior Director of Grants and Awards, Lujean Baab, at lbaab@vt.edu
