Saturday’s matchup between Michigan and Washington was expected to be a showdown between two 1-0 teams.
Both were big favorites in their openers against non-Power Five teams, but the Huskies were upset at home against Montana, falling 13-7 while turning the ball over three times.
Meanwhile, Michigan cruised to a 47-14 victory over Western Michigan. But will that strong play continue at 8 p.m. Saturday at Michigan Stadium against a Washington team looking to bounce back after a disastrous loss?
Here are score predictions from MLive’s three Michigan beat writers.

Before the season, I viewed this game as a pick’em. After both team’s Week 1 results, I give the Wolverines the advantage, but not by much. While the Wolverines looked impressive in all three phases against WMU, it is still a small sample size against a Mid-American Conference opponent. Meanwhile, the Huskies are plagued by injuries at wide receiver and struggled to protect quarterback Dylan Morris in their opener. Yes, their loss to Montana was a shocker, but I’m trying to not read too much into one performance. Washington’s defense is still solid, and I think Ronnie Bell’s injury will set Michigan’s offense back a bit, at least initially. The Wolverines will still come away with a win, but I think it will take a late touchdown and a defensive stop to do so. Prediction: Michigan 24, Washington 17

Michigan looked much better than I expected for a Week 1 game with a new defense still trying to figure things out. Despite an upset loss to FCS Montana, Washington should still provide a better test for the Wolverines on both sides of the ball. That cross-country trip for the Huskies should not be overlooked, and with Michigan riding high after a Week 1 blowout with a new attitude and prime-time audience watching Saturday night, I think a TD win is the likely scenario. Prediction: Michigan 31, Washington 24
Andrew Kahn
Entering the season I viewed Michigan’s game against Washington as a toss up, and leaned towards Washington when making my season record prediction.
New information has come to light.
Michigan looked good in its opener. Perhaps a little better than expected, sure. But the real surprise was Washington losing to Montana and only scoring one touchdown. I don’t want to overreact to that result and predict a Michigan blowout win. Washington’s defense, expected to be very good, was very good against Montana. The offense was abysmal, but I wouldn’t expect Washington’s quarterback -- or quarterbacks, if highly-touted freshman Sam Huard sees the field -- to throw three interceptions again. And maybe a receiver or two returns from injury to help the passing game.
What transpired in Ann Arbor and Seattle last Saturday doesn’t have me overhauling my preseason expectations. But the needle has moved just enough. Prediction: Michigan 24, Washington 20
