The news that the state universities will be offering ethnic studies as a course requirement for graduation is laudatory and long overdue. For more than 50 years I taught at state universities and community colleges. My classes included African American and Latinos and of course a majority of white students. I was often dismayed to learn that many of them were woefully lacking not only in knowledge about their own ethnic backgrounds but also in even the larger happenings of American history. Lacking knowledge of the injustices of slavery, the oppression of Latinos as well as Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos or any of the denigrated waves of immigrants that have been badly received and abused in our long history leaves them open to viewing our nation as one of white superiority. As the last three weeks have shown, that view can fray and dismantle the very fabric of our democracy.
