The Portland Thorns kick off their 2020 season against the Courage in the most challenging of circumstances as the NWSL becomes the first U.S. professional sports league to return to action when the NWSL Challenge Cup, a one-off bubble-style tournament that has been designed for the COVID-19 pandemic, gets underway at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, Utah, on Saturday with kickoff at 9:30 a.m. PT on CBS.
The NWSL season was supposed to start in April, but the global coronavirus pandemic scrapped the entire preseason and players didn’t know if they would even play soccer again in 2020. Now, the Thorns get to face rival North Carolina in front of a national audience.
