It now appears that Woodland School District sites will look very familiar come fall — marking the first steps toward normalcy for students since mid-March.
During a continued school board meeting Friday night trustees have changed course and now instructed district staff to explore full-time, in-person schooling for transitional kindergarten through 12th grade. This instruction came after directing district staff to look into a hybrid learning model the day before.
There will be a fully virtual learning option for parents and students who do not feel safe to go back.
A survey will be sent out to staff and parents to get an idea of what option families would prefer to choose so district staff can make a safety plan accordingly.
There will be an added focus on providing virtual learning for students after community members voiced concerns that the virtual learning set up during the last part of this semester was unsatisfactory.
The district will also need to provide a plan to go back into 100% distance learning in case schools are shut down again in the fall due to COVID-19 rates.
“The fluidity of what we are looking at is important,” said Board Vice President Jake Whitaker. “It could be a moment’s notice when we would have to go virtual.”
Details to work out include setting up times throughout the semester where students could switch back and forth from in-person learning to virtual if they feel safe or unsafe about infection rates.
“It’s important to be able to switch back and forth,” said Board President Morgan Childers. “Maybe a certain window that allows this. There needs to be a mechanism for families and students to change their minds throughout the year.”
The district will also explore elective and common core courses for students.
The board will continue the discussion and hope to take action on what the district provides them during their next regularly scheduled board meeting on July 16.
