Flooding and the coronavirus have combined to frustrate golfers and golf course owners in 2020, but both groups appear ready to take advantage of the weather and safety measures to hit the links in July.
Here are 10 Saginaw-area golf courses to play if provided the opportunity.
Apple Mountain
The former ski mountain opened as a golf course in 1998, incorporating the mountains and undulations from the ski slope into the golf course. The John Sanford-designed course features two holes from the top of the mountain, the par-3 No. 5 hole and par-4 No. 6 hole. The course features four sets of tees with yardage ranging from 4,966 from the red and 6,947 from the black. Only one hole, No. 17, has no bunker, with 14 of the holes including some form of water hazard. Prices for 18 holes are $64 Monday through Thursday, $74 on weekends. The course features senior and twilight specials.

Currie Municipal Golf Complex
The floods that hit Midland did not spare Currie Golf Course, but the multitude of available holes has proven an advantage for the Midland public course. Currie featured an 18-hole West course and 9-hole East course, but the flooding has forced Currie to incorporate nine holes from the West and nine holes from the East to create an 18-hole course until the rest of the West course has recovered. The East course was designed by Gilbert Currie, with Jerry Matthews overseeing the West course’s expansion to 18 holes in 2002. The revamped layout features a variety of tee sets, from 5,033 yards to 6,692 yards. Rates are $39, with some twilight specials. The course may change as more holes open. Currently, Currie is offering an extra “practice” hole as part of the West course, giving golfers 19 holes to play.

It was designed in 1992 by Dick Nugent, creating a “Scottish” feel with plenty of fescue incorporated into the course. Water comes into play on eight holes, most prominently on holes 13 and 17. The Fortress uses four sets of tees. From the gold, the course measures at 4,837 yards. The black tees cover 6,840 yards. Price for 18 holes Monday through Thursday is $60. Weekend rates vary from $60 to $70 depending on tee times. The course features senior, junior and twilight rates.

Saginaw Country Club
The Saginaw Country Club is private, so joining or knowing a member is the best shot at golfing on the classic course. Designed by Tom Bendelow in 1898, the Country Club opened in 1902. It was re-designed by Jerry Matthews in 1983 and has hosted numerous GAM events and golf legends, including Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson. The course is not long, measuring 6,143 from the black tees and 5,563 from the white. But it compensates for the lack of distance with tight fairways, plenty of trees and fast greens.

But the Swan Valley Golf Course has weathered the weather and is in good shape, offering golfers a course with plenty of rolling terrain and water on 12 of its 18 holes. Designed by Karl Mueller in 1962, the Swan Valley course was redesigned by Jerry Matthews in 1997. The course features four sets of tees, measuring 4,834 from the gold to 6,067 from the blue tees. Across the road, Crooked Creek has also recovered from flooding but is using a new 18th hole to allow its grass to grow back where the flooding occurred.
