Napoli is through to the Coppa Italia final after earning a 1-1 draw against Inter Milan on Saturday, moving on with a 2-1 aggregate victory after winning the first leg, 1-0, in February. It was Dries Mertens who stole the show with a goal that didn't just book a ticket for Wednesday's final against Juventus, but it also saw him pass Marek Hamsik as the club's all-time leading goalscorer with 122 goals.
Inter had the chances needed to move on but an inspiring performance from Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina sealed it. The veteran overcame an early blunder on a goal by Christian Eriksen to then deny the Danish star with just under 10 minutes to go with a fantastic low save while also making a brilliant stop on a Romelu Lukaku header in the first half.
Eriksen was able to give Inter a big boost just three minutes in with this dangerous ball from a corner kick that somehow snuck in:
That goal meant the next one would be crucial, and if it were Inter, Napoli would then have needed to score twice to move on. But Inter could not find the back of the net for the next 87 minutes plus stoppage time, while Napoli did with Ospina again playing a critical role. Ospina gathered the ball in his box with Inter attacking before drilling a ball to midfield to Lorenzo Insigne. The Italian then fought off two players to set up Mertens alone in the box for what would be the tie-clinching goal in the 41st minute:
The result means Napoli, during an up and down season domestically, could be just 90 minutes away from a major trophy. Standing in the way are not only Juve and Cristiano Ronaldo, but former manager Maurizio Sarri.
Kickoff time for Wednesday's final is yet to be determined.
