Bermuda Day festivities are the latest events to be cancelled in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Lovitta Foggo, the Minister of Labour, Community Affairs and Sport, said the Bermuda Day Parade and the 2020 Bermuda Half Marathon will not go ahead this year.

Both events had been scheduled to take place on May 29 as part of the Bermuda Day celebrations.

Ms Foggo said: “The safety, health and wellbeing of all of Bermuda’s citizens is this Government’s number one priority.

“Out of an overwhelming abundance of caution, and following the guidance and recommendations of our health professionals, the Ministry of Labour, Community Affairs and Sport has made the very difficult decision to cancel these events this year.”

She said that CITV would broadcast past Heritage Month events and activities including the Bermuda Day Parade, and that the Ministry would look for ways to “symbolically recognise” Heritage Month.

Ms Foggo thanked the organising committee at the Department of Community Affairs for their contributions to the cancelled event.

She added: “We know this is a disappointing development, but keeping our residents safe and saving lives must be our country’s sole aim.”
