“It was time,” a relieved Frank Reich said after his Colts snapped a four-game losing streak last week in Miami that stretched back to last year’s wild-card playoff loss in Buffalo. But that was the Dolphins, and that was Jacoby Brissett — this challenge is something entirely different tonight in Baltimore.
The Colts are not naïve to the fact that the Ravens are 14-1 in primetime games at M&T Bank Stadium under coach John Harbaugh, but don’t discount the fact that two of the biggest wins in the Reich era have come under the lights on the road. The Colts beat the eventual Super Bowl champion Chiefs back in 2019 at Arrowhead, then stomped on the Titans last season in Nashville to win by 20. A win tonight could change the tenor of their season.
To pull the upset, everything starts with containing Jackson, who’s improved significantly as a thrower in his fourth season as the starter. The former league MVP is averaging a career-best 8.2 yards per completion, sixth-best in football, and is pushing the ball downfield better than at any point in his career. The Colts’ pass rush and secondary will have to put together its best game of the season, and do so without two starters: defensive end Kwity Paye is out with a hamstring, and cornerback Rock Ya-Sin, who’s been much better this season, is out with an ankle. So much will rest on Darius Leonard, the Colts’ speedy linebacker, who’ll have to keep Jackson in front of him. Leonard's ankle is improving, and we all know how much The Maniac loves the big stage.
“That boy special,” Leonard said this week of Jackson. “You see it. I don’t feel like he gets the respect that he deserves from this league.”
