The Mets lost a tough one to the Rays by a score of 3-2 tonight, snapping their 7-game winning streak. The Mets held a 2-0 lead going into the 8th inning, but a cruising David Peterson ran into trouble to start the 8th by giving up a leadoff homer, and Luis Rojas didn’t seem very inclined to pull his young starter until it was almost too late. Peterson allowed a double to the next batter and was allowed to face one more hitter before finally being pulled for Trevor May.
May came in with one out and nearly escaped the jam, but gave up a two-out, game-tying double to Met killer Manuel Margot. He struck out the next hitter to keep the game tied, but the Mets couldn’t score off Pete Fairbanks in the 9th. Miguel Castro loaded the bases in the bottom half of the 9th, and Aaron Loup came in to surrender a walk off base hit to Brett Phillips.
The Mets couldn’t figure much out against Tyler Glasnow all night long, with the lone exception being the 5th inning. Glasnow retired the first 14 hitters before the -illars struck in the 5th. Kevin Pillar broke through with the Mets’ first hit in the fifth, and was followed by Jonathan Villar who mashed a two-run homer to right to put the Mets in front 2-0. But that was all the offense the Mets could muster against the Rays’ ace, who tossed eight innings.
Peterson, despite losing it in the 8th, had one of the best outings of his career. It looked like things were unraveling for him in the second inning once again when he loaded the bases on a hit and two walks with only one out, but he struck out the last two batters to escape the frame. He then proceeded to retire the next 17 hitters, lasting all the way to that 8th inning. His finished having gone 7.1 innings, allowing 4 runs and 2 hits with nine punchouts.
