The Mets beat the Cardinals 4-1 on Thursday afternoon doing mostly what they’ve done all season. Starter Taijuan Walker marked his best start of the year with seven innings of one-hit ball, while relievers Trevor May and Edwin Díaz closed the books on the Cardinals batters. The offense batted 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position while leaving 17 runners on base, which is a franchise record and an especially egregious data point in a pattern of this season’s RISP futility.
Where the Mets’ batters succeeded today was in not swinging, letting the Cardinals pitchers make their own funeral plans with eleven walks. Three of those walks came with the bases loaded, which was more than enough to seal the win for the Mets. Francisco Lindor led the way with three walks and a run, and more importantly, broke a 26-at-bat hitless streak with a ninth-inning single.
The Mets return to New York to play the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday night at 7:10, where David Peterson is expected to start against Zac Gallen.
