Where would the Mets be without the Bench Mob? Tonight was yet another instance where one of the replace-Mets came through in a big spot. This time, it was Tomás Nido, whose ninth inning, go-ahead home run gave the Mets their second straight win against the Atlanta Braves.
The Mets went with a bullpen game in this one, starting things off with Miguel Castro, who tossed a perfect inning, before turning to Tommy Hunter, who provided two shutout innings of his own. The Mets broke the ice against Tucker Davidson in the third, courtesy of a Jonathan Villar two-run homer to give the Mets the lead.
After no-hitting the Braves through four, Atlanta finally broke through in the fifth with an Austin Riley leadoff home run against Robert Gsellman. The Mets struck back with a run in the sixth, but the Braves got it right back with a Freddie Freeman homer off of Trevor May.
The Mets maintained their slim lead into the eighth, when Aaron Loup—left in after pitching the seventh—allowed a lead-off double to pinch hitter Ehire Adrianza. Jeurys Familia came in and eventually gave up a broken bat game-tying single to Marcell Ozuna. That set the stage for Nido’s heroics in the ninth inning off of Atlanta closer Will Smith. Edwin Díaz, pitching in his third straight game, tossed a perfect ninth for his seventh save.
