In a game that went back and forth many times, the Mets fell to the Braves 5-4.
After the two starting pitchers David Peterson and Charlie Morton started out strong, the Mets were able to strike first in the fourth inning, thanks to a 431 foot solo home run off the bat of Jonathan Villar. That lead did not last long as David Peterson ran into trouble in the fifth inning, giving up three runs.
After allowing a one-out double to Austin Riley and hitting William Contreras with a pitch with two outs, Guillermo Heredia hit a RBI single to tie the game up at 1. Next, pitcher Charlie Morton helped himself out, giving the Braves the lead with a two-out single. The third run of the inning came when Peterson walked Ronald Acuña, which also ended Peterson’s night.
In the top of the seventh, the Mets mounted a comeback to take the lead, 4-3. Starting with Dominic Smith reaching second base on an error by the pitcher, followed by a James McCann walk, Jose Peraza cut the lead in half with a single. Then, bench mob hero Tomás Nido gave the Mets lead with a two-run single.
The Mets gave the lead right back in the eighth inning, with Aaron Loup giving up three straight hits to make the game 4-4, but Jacob Barnes then came on to keep it at that. After getting Cameron Maybin to third base with one out in the top of the ninth and not scoring, Jacob Barnes came back out in the bottom half of the inning. On the first pitch against Ronald Acuña, Acuña swung, and hit the ball over the fence to end the game with a solo home run.
