The Mets won their home opener in bizarre walk off fashion, taking the Marlins out 3-2. It was the rare situation where literally everyone in the ballpark knew what the deal was, but because the play wasn’t reviewable, the Mets got the very weird win.
Taijuan Walker started for the Mets, and was solid over six innings of work, giving up two runs on four hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. Sitting in the mid-90s and flashing some plus breaking pitches, Walker was at the mercy of an offensive draught from his team, who seemingly wasted opportunity after opportunity at the plate.
Miguel Castro, Trevor May, and Edwin Diaz all pitched scoreless innings for the Mets, but their offense could simply not get going. The Mets’ first run came on a sacrifice fly hit by Dominic Smith in the fifth inning.
However, the bats came alive at the end of the game. The Mets tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on an absolute bomb by Jeff McNeil. A Luis Guillorme infield single was followed up by an opposite field double by Nimmo, and put runners on second and third with one out. An intentional walk to Francisco Lindor loaded the bases for Michael Conforto, who leaned into a pitch and led to a highly contested hit by pitch for the walk off win.
