NIU (14-13, 6-6), which beat Buffalo in the team's previous meeting earlier this season, jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Maria Potsi and Anastasia Rakita posted a 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles, while Diana Lukyanova and Iullia Dmitrieva scored a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles.
Potsi and Rakita came out strong in singles play winning their respective matches in straight sets. Potsi won at No. 1 singles with a 7-6 (3-0), 6-1 victory over Pia Schwartz, while Rakita defeated Gabriella Akoypan, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
After dropping matches at Nos, 4, 3 and 5 singles, Dmitrieva battled M. Carvajal Torres in a three-set win. She lost the first set, 2-6, battled in the second for a 7-6 (7-0) win before a dominating 6-0 victory in the third set to take the match and give NIU the win.
"This was an amazing match," NIU head coach Eric Burns said. "With the match tied 3-3 Iullia fought off three match points in the second set tiebreaker to come back and win the second set and then dominated the third set to clinch the match.
"I am so proud of her and the team and the way they fought and didn't give up in this match. Iullia waited her turn to have an opportunity like this and her patience and hard work paid off. It's so great to see."
The Huskies are back in action Friday, April 30 when NIU travels to Muncie, Ind. To face Ball State in the penultimate match of the season. The match begins with doubles play at 12 p.m. CT.
