Boston Red Sox score 11 runs on 17 hits in win: Alex Verdugo, J.D. Martinez, Kiké Hernández homer, Nathan Eov - MassLive.com

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that starter Martín Pérez is not a morning person. That is why he started the second game of yesterday’s doubleheader.

Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito apparently isn’t either.

Giolito threw 46 pitches and allowed six runs to the Red Sox in the first inning before noon Monday. The righty returned for the second inning and gave up a homer to J.D. Martinez and a walk to Rafael Devers before Tony La Russa finally removed him.

Boston won its annual 11:10 a.m. Patriots’ Day game, beating the White Sox 11-4 at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox — who stroked 17 hits — improved to 11-6 this season and 71-53 on Patriots’ Day.

Verdugo, Martinez and Christian Vázquez each had three hits. Kiké Hernández, Rafael Devers and Franchy Cordero each had two hits.

FIRST INNING RECAP:

  • Kiké Hernández: Homer just over the Green Monster to tie the game, 1-1.
  • Alex Verdugo: Single to left field.
  • J.D. Martinez: Single to right field, Verdugo to third.
  • Rafael Devers: Single to right field, Verdugo scores, Martinez to second. 2-1 Red Sox.
  • Christian Vázquez: Bunt single to load the bases.
  • Marwin Gonzalez: Single to right. Martinez scores, bases remain loaded. 3-1 Red Sox.
  • Hunter Renfroe: Groundout to third base, Devers scores. Vázquez and Gonzalez advanced to second and third. 4-1 Red Sox.
  • Franchy Cordero: Single to left field. Vázquez and Gonzalez score. 6-1
  • Bobby Dalbec: Walk to loaded the bases on 14-pitch plate appearance. He fouled off eight pitches.
  • Hernández: pop out.
  • Verdugo: flyout to left field.

Martinez’s 398-foot homer in the second inning made it 7-1. Alex Verdugo’s 417-foot homer in the third inning made it 9-2.

Nathan Eovaldi pitched 6 ⅓ innings, allowing four runs, nine hits and no walks while striking out 10.

Rookie Garrett Whitlock hurled 2 ⅔ scoreless innings, striking out two. He has hurled 9 scoreless innings.
