The Chicago Cubs completed their sweep of the Mets on Thursday night winning 4-3 in ten innings at Wrigley Field. Reliable relief pitching and a timely pinch-hit RBI double from J.D. Davis kept the Mets in the game, but Edwin Díaz working a rare second inning gave up an RBI single with the bases loaded to Jayson Heyward in the tenth to end the game.
The Mets started the game with three regulars on the bench: Brandon Nimmo, Jeff McNeil, and Davis all sat in favor of Kevin Pillar, Jonathan Villar, and Luis Guillorme. All three regulars would eventually pinch-hit with Davis having the only successful turn at-bat, with Nimmo and McNeil both striking out in critical situations.
Pete Alonso homered for the second consecutive night to put the Mets on the board in the fourth inning, this time managing to keep the ball in the stadium. Michael Conforto, Dom Smith, and Davis also contributed doubles that were each less than a foot away from clearing the outfield wall, and any one of which might have made the winning difference.
Despite a short start from Joey Lucchesi, Mets relief pitching showed out with three perfect innings from Sean Reid-Foley in his Mets debut and a shutdown seventh and eighth innings with a combination of Trevor May, Aaron Loup, and Miguel Castro. Edwin Díaz escaped trouble in the ninth but ran into trouble again in the tenth, eventually ceding the game on the Heyward single.
