Syracuse, N.Y. — All eyes have been on the Syracuse men’s basketball team and its Cinderella-esque NCAA tournament run into the Sweet 16.
The team is clicking on all cylinders, and each player has contributed to the stat sheet in his own way.
Buddy Boeheim has been on an offensive tear over the past few weeks. The son of the legendary Orange coach is making a name for himself on the national stage, leading his team with 27.5 points per game on shooting splits of 59% from the field, 56% from beyond the 3-point arc and 80% from the free-throw line. That’s pretty efficient.
Boeheim ranks third in scoring among players still in the tournament, trailing UCLA’s Johnny Juzang and Kevin Obanor of Oral Roberts.
How about the resurgence of Joe Girard, who’s rewriting his own narrative after a tough regular season? He’s leading the team in assists with seven helpers per game — 1st in the tournament among active players — but also serves as the second-leading scorer with 12 points per game.
An interesting little nugget is the fact that all seven of his makes from the field were beyond the 3-point line.
Every team needs a glue guy around this time of the year, and Marek Dolezaj plays that role for Syracuse. When he’s not in foul trouble (leads the team with seven), the 6-foot-10 senior is the most-reliable player on the court. Dolezaj has made all nine of his free throws through two games, tied for first in the tournament among active players.
